This time we feature girugamesh, who recently appeared at a festival overseas! We asked for their comments on the festival, in which they toured around with MUCC, as well as a tour through Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya in the summer. They also talked about specialty dishes to recommend for each city, so those who are going to their shows must check them out!
And which girugamesh song do you think is a summer song? Read on to find out if you think of the same song as the band!
― Touring around with MUCC, did you often have opportunities to talk to them while you were on the trip or on other occasions? Is there any episode you remember on the airplane or in your free time?
Satoshi: Tatsuro-san wouldn’t let me go to a bathroom on the flight back to Japan. Nii: We all enjoyed it together. They’re so kind and fun to be with. shuU: We were together all the time. Tatsuro-san seemed pleased to be with us, saying that they got four more staffs for the festival. Яyo: We stuck together and talked a lot casually or seriously. It’s fun to tour around with so many people! I’d love to do that again.
— As there were numerous foreign artists played at the event, did you learn anything from them? And how would you promote yourself overseas in the future with what you learned from other artists?
Satoshi: There was a band we played with on the same stage, and they gave an extremely energetic performance even though they had some troubles on stage. They really told me something. Nii: It was really inspiring to be able to play at the festival. shuU: It was full of excitement during those two days. I felt competitive to see other bands in the same environment and thought I wanted to enjoy myself at shows in the future, even if something unexpected happens. Яyo: They were all so tough. I’ve learned from their toughness.
— Talk passionately about how you felt after the event! And tell us if there was any band you’d like to play with again.
Satoshi: It was a new experience for me to feel an air on the outdoor stage, which was something different from the one we usually feel. I wanna watch “Slipknot”. We played on different days and I couldn’t watch their performance, so I wanna see them. Nii: I was really glad that we could participate in the same event as other bands I know the names of and so many people could come over to see our performance. A band I’d like to play with would be “Killswitch Engage”. shuU: I also enjoyed the event as an audience to see and learn from some other bands, among which there were many that I had never heard of in Japan. At the same time I realized the world was still so much bigger than I thought and felt frustrated on so many occasions that I want to play at festivals again to prove ourselves. By the way I forgot the name of the band, but the one played before us at METAL TOWN was so cool and I want to play with them again. Яyo: It was our second time to perform at a festival, but I felt we’re still very young in terms of experience. We’re not used to an air of festivals, so I want to acquire experience by participating in many festivals in the future. A band I’d like to play with again would be “Dir en grey”. I don’ t think we’ll ever be able to play with them in Japan, but it would be great if we could be together again.
― Having often been overseas, which country or region would you like to visit in the future, and why?
Satoshi: I wanna go to the USA more. Nii: I’d like to visit wherever they need us. shuU: I want to tour on every continent including Australia, the South America and Africa. It’s not because I’ve got a specific reason, but I’d like to keep on challenging. Яyo: I wanna visit the South America! That’s because it’s in winter there when it’s summer in Japan. Though I wanna go to wherever they call us.
[About TOUR 2009 “SUMMER EVOLUTION”]
― TOUR 2009 “SUMMER EVOLUTION” will be held at the height of summer. Is there a song of girugamesh that reminds you summer? And also, can you give us advice on how to enjoy that song?
Satoshi: It’s “BORDER”! We made a music video of this song under the blazing hot sun in the summer soaking in sweat, so that must be it! Get wild and sweaty together with all your might! Nii: “evolution”! Forget about bad things and just concentrate on enjoying yourself! shuU: “evolution” as the title of the tour indicates. It’s easy to enjoy the song. Just think nothing. Яyo: It must be “evolution”, because we were making an album “MUSIC” around summer last year. To enjoy the song you can dance.
― Live shows would help us survive the hot summer! Having just come back from overseas, can you express your enthusiasm for the show by a single English word?
Satoshi: Nii: shuU: Яyo:
― What local specialty or spots would you recommend for those who come from overseas?
― Osaka (Osaka MUSE)
Satoshi: Takoyaki and Tsurutontan. (Note: “Takoyaki” is a Japanese dumpling made of flour mixed with octopus. “Tsurutontan” is a chain restaurant of “Udon”, or thick wheat-flour noodle.) Nii: Takoyaki (Kouga-ryu). (Note: “Kouga-ryu” is the name of a Takoyaki restaurant.) shuU: Osaka has a local food called “Takoyaki”, so I want them to try it. Яyo: Try Takoyaki.
― Tokyo (Akasaka Blitz)
Satoshi: Tokyo Banana. (Note: “Tokyo Banana” is a sponge cake with banana cream in it and it’s one of specialties for souvenir in Tokyo.) Nii: Shibuya. shuU: I wonder where… Disneyland, maybe? Яyo: They don’t have specialties! But there are lots of places to hang out.
― Nagoya (Nagoya HeartLand STUDIO)
Satoshi: Misokatsu and Tebasaki. (Note: “Misokatsu” is a fried pork cutlet (“katsu”) served with special sweet sauce made of various kinds of miso and sugar. “Tebasaki” is a deep fried chicken wing.) Nii: Misokatsu. shuU: Nagoya Castle!! (Note: “Nagoya Castle” is a famous Japanese castle that is 400-year-old!)
— Finally, do you have a message for your fans overseas?
Satoshi: We’re gonna go see you whenever you need us, so I’d appreciate your support!! Nii: We’ll continue to create quality works and quality shows. shuU: We’ve just made our first step towards a big dream to go international, so I’ll work hard to be able to go visit you as many times as possible by creating great works. Яyo: Keep on looking forward to outstanding works from us!
